Vernice A. Gilbert, age 99 of Wahoo, died Sunday, April 7, 2013 at South Haven Living Center in Wahoo. She was born December 11, 1913 at Ithaca, NE to Fred and Anna (Rexilius) Schiefelbein. She attended Saunders County Grade School District 102 through the 8th grade and graduated from Wahoo High School in 1932. On November 1, 1933, she married W.E. (Bill) Gilbert in Ithaca. They owned and operated a grocery store in Ithaca from March 1936 until May 1951, and moved to Wahoo in 1956. Vernice served as the Executive Secretary for the US Government Selective Services Unit in Wahoo for 25 years. Vernice was active in the Ithaca United Methodist Church, and its predecessors, for 36 years until she transferred her membership to the Wahoo First United Methodist Church in 1961. She served as Sunday School Superintendent for 40 years, was a Sunday School teacher, President of Evening Esthers, church pianist, and was Chairman of the Board of Stewards and Trustees. She was also active for many years as a member of United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, brother Ray Schiefelbein, sister June Davis, and son-in-law Joel Sipes. Vernice is survived by her daughter Ruth Sipes of Houston, TX; granddaughter Stephanie Woolsey of Fredericksburg, VA; grandson Jeffrey Gilbert (Merideth) Sipes of Houston, TX; great-grandchildren William (Kristin) Buckmaster of Prince Frederick, MD, Sarah Bingham of Fredericksburg, VA, John Sipes, David Sipes, Rachel Sipes and Charlie Sipes, all of Houston, TX; and niece Kathy Schiefelbein of Ceresco.
