Ruth H. Aufenkamp, age 87 of Wahoo, died Thursday, January 30, 2014 in Lincoln. She was born May 27, 1926 in rural Ashland to Charley and Tena (Bloom) Aufenkamp. Ruth grew up on a farm near Ashland. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1943 and then attended the University of Nebraska where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority – a connection she has continued throughout her life. Ruth was a kindergarten teacher in Colorado Springs, CO for 35 years. Following her retirement, she returned to Nebraska to live near her parents in Wahoo where she remained for the rest of her life. As a longtime, faithful member of Wahoo First United Methodist Church, Ruth played a vital role with the Prayer Tree. She enjoyed pastoral visits and receiving communion in her home. Ruth delighted in listening to Nebraska Cornhusker games and Chicago Cubs baseball, attending her Class of 43 reunions, gardening on her deck to raise beautiful petunias and hearty tomatoes, and playing bridge. She loved El' Bee's, Reuben sandwiches and, most of all, conversations on the phone with her treasured family and friends. Ruthie had a heart that was beyond enormous when it came to caring, loving, and giving to others. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Charley and Tena Aufenkamp. She is survived by a plethora of cousins and friends, especially including Gerry, Patti, Jim, Vicki, Mike, and her special boy, Luke, and their families. Serving as Casket Bearers are Bob Schofield, Biff Schofield, Mike Simons, Luke Simons, Seth Schofield and Spencer Schofield. Donations in her honor may be made to the Ashland-Greenwood School Foundation or the Wahoo School Foundation.
