Rachel Sutton

Rachel Sutton was born May 4, 1927 in Wahoo to Albin and Hilda (Hull) Hanson. She graduated from Wahoo High School then attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and Luther College in Wahoo. Throughout her childhood, Rachel had a very close relationship with her three sisters. This bond continued into adulthood and was one of the hallmarks of her life. On December 27, 1946, Rachel married her high school sweetheart, Robert Sutton. He had just returned from military service, and the two of them settled into farm life. Several times each year, as the neighboring farmers gathered to assist one another with work in the fields, Rachel dutifully took her turn preparing several hearty meals each day for the nearly three dozen workers. She embraced her role as a mother and grandmother and faithfully supported her children and grandchildren in all their sporting events and other school activities. Rachel had a competitive nature when it came to playing board games with her grandchildren. She was not one to sacrifice victory and was definitely in it to win it. She and Bob were longtime members of a Bridge Club and enjoyed their monthly get togethers with these cherished friends. As a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Rachel poured herself into various church ministries including WELCA, the Altar Guild, Ladies Aid, Ladies Choir, and the quilting group. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Once her four children were raised, Rachel went to work at Younkers and was proud of her 13 year career in the Ladies Department. She retired in 1997. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents Albin and Hilda (Hull) Hanson, husband Robert Sutton, daughter Sandra Sutton, sister Mary Nell Morris, brothers-in-law Robert Morris, Keith Peterson, and Jack Stewart. She is survived by her children Mary (Gregg) Hargis of Fort Collins CO, Dick Sutton of Omaha, John (Colleen) Sutton of Wahoo, Mark (Rose) Sutton of Wahoo; sisters Joann Peterson of Urbana IL, and Pat Stewart of Hebron NE; grandchildren Ben (Nancy) Hargis of Parker CO, Ted (Lili) Hargis of Steamboat Springs CO, Kim (Ryan) Sheppard of Evergreen CO, Kelly Hargis of Jackson Hole WY, Zach Sutton of Omaha, Chad Sutton of Omaha, Paul (Liz) Sutton of Wahoo, Donna (Brad) Brester of Wilber NE, Bonnie Sutton of Wahoo, Jack Sutton of Wahoo, Jacey Sutton of Wahoo, Erin Sutton of Wahoo, Samantha Sutton of Wahoo; great-grandchildren Evan Hargis, Trent Hargis, Sofia Rodriquez, Jayden Hargis, Brandi Sutton, Gavin Sutton and Carly Sutton. Casket Bearers will be Ted Hargis, Zach Sutton, Chad Sutton, Ben Hargis, Paul Sutton, Jack Sutton, Ryan Sheppard and Brad Brester. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Kim Sheppard, Kelly Hargis, Donna Brester, Bonnie Sutton, Jacey Sutton, Erin Sutton and Samantha Sutton. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
