Mary A. Hanke, age 93 of Wahoo, died Thursday, November 17, 2022 in Wahoo. She was born July 16, 1929 in Yutan, Nebraska to Jacob and Amanda (Rohde) Sievers. As a teenager, Mary worked at a grocery store in Yutan. On September 17, 1947, she married Ralph “Barney” Schneider in Yutan. Two years later, they moved to California and lived there until they returned to Nebraska in 1978. Barney died in 1982. Mary and Loren Hanke were married May 17, 1984 in Ithaca after which they farmed until Loren died in September, 1996.
Mary was a two-time cancer survivor. While living in California, Mary became an avid and skilled bowler. She continued bowling after moving to Wahoo. Mary was an active member of Ithaca United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time at the Wahoo Senior Center, and making trips to the casinos. She frequently went on organized bus tours where she made new friends and visited new places. One of Mary’s favorite activities was talking about the “old days”. She looked forward to spending time with her family and getting together with them on holidays. Christmas Eve was the holiday Mary most enjoyed.
She was preceded in death by her husbands “Barney” Schneider and Loren Hanke; siblings Otto, Pauline, Max, Herb, Maxine, Mike, Tuffy, and Janie. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Judy and Daniel Hraban of Weston; son Charles Schneider of Nevada; sister Meg Bonow of Ithaca; 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 am Tuesday at Ithaca United Methodist Church with interment at Hollst Lawn Cemetery in Yutan. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.
