Leroy E. Nelson

LeRoy E. Nelson, age 89 of Wahoo, died Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Saunders House in Wahoo. He was born January 10, 1923 at Mead, NE to Frederick Julius and Esther Dorothy (Swanson) Nelson. LeRoy attended Mead Elementary School and Mead High School as well as Luther College. On March 5, 1948, he married Bertha Marie Mayberry in Council Bluffs, IA. They lived on the family farm near Mead and, after retiring from farming, moved into the town of Mead and later to Wahoo. LeRoy was a member of Alma Lutheran Church where he has served as Church Council President, Sunday School teacher and choir member. He was a member of the Saunders County Farm Bureau where he served as a voting delegate and as Board Chairman and was a 4-H Leader for many years. Leroy was a longtime board member of the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District and the Mead Planning Commission. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Norene Lindahl and Ruth Olson, brothers Julius and Raymond, and twin brother Lamont. LeRoy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bertha of Wahoo; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Dione Nelson of Mead; grandchildren Christopher (Molly) Nelson (children Andi and Tyson) of Yutan, David (Alyssa) Nelson of Colon, Shawn (Stevie) Nelson (children Hayden and Brennen) of Wahoo, Katie Nelson (fiancé Brandon DeGroff, and children Carson Maly and Conway DeGroff) of Yutan, Grant Nelson and Reid Nelson of Mead; sisters-in-law Lucille (Harold) Wheeler of Atlanta, GA and Evelyn (Doug) Van Horn of LaVista, NE; nieces, nephews and cousins.
