Helen I Schmidt

Helen I. Schmidt, age 97 of Wahoo, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in Wahoo. She was born May 31, 1915 at Wann, NE to John and Emma (Passo) Speckmann. She attended District 38 School through the eighth grade and completed her education at Mead High School. Following graduation, she worked at the Ordnance Plant in Mead. On August 22, 1943, she married Vernon A. Schmidt in Yutan, NE. Helen and Vernon farmed east of Wahoo. They retired from farming in 1975 and moved to Wahoo in 1995. Vernon died March 7, 1997 at the age of 84. Helen was a charter member of the Wahoo Saddle Club and a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Wahoo. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon; brothers Harvey Speckmann, Ben Speckmann, Emil Speckmann, and Johnny Speckmann; sisters Bertha Westphal, Marie Pearson, Elsie Anderson, Caroline George and Anna Speckmann. Helen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Brian and Susan Schmidt of Edina, MO; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Gale Miller of Lampe, MO; granddaughters Pamela (Mark) Duneman of Willard, MO and Kim (Gary) Vansickle of Joplin, MO; and 5 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church or to the Wahoo Senior Citizen's Center. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Stuart Westphal, Bob Speckmann, Dean Laughlin, Marke Duneman, Cameron Duneman, and Paden Vansickle.
