Elden C. Miller was born September 9, 1924 in Lincoln, to Henry and Elizabeth (Schilling) Miller. Immediately following graduation from Lincoln High School, Elden enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Communications Specialist during World War II and later served in the National Guard. Elden was an enthusiastic Amateur Radio Operator and used these skills throughout his life – with Civil Defense, the Red Cross, the National Guard, and with local law enforcement agencies. Elden spent as much time as possible in the outdoors and had a special appreciation for fishing the river at Camp Ashland. Public service was a major theme throughout Elden's life. He helped draw up the plans for the Aviation Hangar at Camp Ashland and formulated an Emergency Action Plan for the state and assisted several counties to enact plans of their own. Once they were completed, Elden tested the plans for their effectiveness and their ability to save lives. Through his work with Civil Defense, Elden travelled to disaster sites throughout the state and across the country to apply his knowledge to the situation and to render aid as needed. Following his retirement, Elden and Kathryn became active in the American Red Cross and traveled throughout the world as first responders whenever tragedy struck. They assisted people in restoring their lives following tornadoes, plane crashes, and other disasters. They spent five weeks in American Samoa following a tragedy there. Elden had served in that location during the war, and was able to share his memories with Kathryn. Together, they earned multiple awards for their service in the Red Cross. In addition to his wife Kathryn, Elden is survived by his children James (Mary) Miller of Omaha, Sue (Keith) Stewart of Lincoln, Gary (Pam) Miller of Wahoo; brother Everett Miller of Lincoln; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his brother Irvin Miller.
