Dwight G. Schulz, age 89 of Mead, died Saturday, July 28, 2018 in Wahoo. He was born in Yutan, Nebraska on July 13, 1929 to Fred and Bertha (Kennec) Schulz. Dwight graduated from Yutan High School at the age of 16 and, the very next day, began working as a truck driver. On November 5, 1955 he married Lona Scoles at Alma Lutheran Church in Mead. Dwight was a gifted athlete and played catcher in the Pioneer Night League and once caught for Bob Gibson. He also shot pool and bowled. He enjoyed playing a good game of Poker or Pitch. Dwight worked as a Postal Clerk and, later, as Postmaster in Omaha for thirty years. He and Lona traveled regularly to places like Las Vegas and Hawaii and attended as many Major League Baseball Spring Training games as possible. Dwight was a longtime member of Alma Lutheran Church in Mead. He is survived by his son Mitch Zaugg of Mead; grandchildren Cortney (Heather) Couch of David City, Kelly Couch of Lincoln; Penny (Shawn) Havelka of Mead, Nicole (Brad) Marsicek of Omaha, Clayton (Erin) Zaugg of Yutan, Jodi (Jeremy) Roberts of Omaha; several great-grandchildren. Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Roxanne Schulz, brother Glen Schulz and sister Marjorie Pokorny. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, August 2, at Alma Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Wednesday at the Pruss-Nabity Funeral Home. Interment will be at Alma Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials to the family for a later designation.
