Doris A. Rood, age 92 of Wahoo, died Tuesday, December 5, 2023 in Wahoo. She was born at the Colon, Nebraska home of her parents Ronald and Clara (Magnuson) Ecklund on October 5, 1931. She was baptized and confirmed at the Malmo Covenant Church. Doris attended District 88 country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Wahoo High School in 1949 on a Friday and began working for the City of Wahoo on Monday.
On June 10, 1951 she married Donald Rood at the First United Methodist Church in Wahoo. Donald entered the United States Army in December of that year and took his basic training at Fort Ord, California. Doris spent the winter of 1952 in California and was with him on weekends. When Don was transferred to Germany to serve during the Korean War, Doris returned to Wahoo where she began employment with Wahoo State Bank. When Donald returned home from military service, he and Doris began their farming life together while Doris continued working at the bank.
In April of 1958 they adopted infant son, David, and, in June of 1963 adopted infant daughter, Debra, through the Nebraska Children’s Home in Omaha. While staying busy being a homemaker and living on the farm, Doris joined the Southside Homemaker’s Extension Club. She served on the Saunders Extension Council as President and Treasurer. Every summer she worked in the office during the County Fair and volunteered wherever she was needed. Doris also volunteered during elections both in the Stocking Precinct and in Wahoo after moving into town. Doris was proud to be a 55 year member of Stella Chapter #57 Order of the Eastern Star.
As the children reached school age, Doris began working part time as the Secretary at Wahoo First United Methodist Church. On October 8, 1995 she was presented a plaque honoring her for 25 years of dedicated service in that role. Doris was recognized on November 26, 2023 as a 72 year member of the church and for her selfless service in many church roles.
Doris was united in marriage to Jack Christensen on March 11, 2007 in Mesa, Arizona. She had been spending the winters there with Wahoo friends since Don’s death.
Doris is survived by her son David Rood of Wahoo; daughter and son-in-law Debra and Lee Plybon of Wahoo; granddaughters Alison (Brandon) Wesely of Wahoo, Melissa Plybon (fiancé Ryan Schaffer) of Wahoo, Hilary (Jared) Ryder of Lincoln; brother-in-law Donald Veskrna of Wahoo; 11 great-grandchildren; step-children Kurt (Linda) Christensen of Bridgeport, NE, Terri (Don) Bailey of Fort Smith, AR, Tracy (Bryan) Kindler of Fremont, Joie (Ed) White of Gilbert, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Donald Rood and Jack Christensen; brother and sister-in-law Clarence and Marge Ecklund; brother Maynard Ecklund; sister and brother-in-law Marge and Harold Miller; sisters-in-law Norma Veskrna and Deanna Laughlin.
