Dave Werner, age 67, of Wahoo, died Thursday, March 9, 2017 in Lincoln. He was born October 28, 1949 in Superior, Nebraska to Edward S. and Iona Mae (Warboys) Werner. On December 31, 1988 he married Jan Hupp in Yutan. Dave worked at the UNL Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead for 44 years and retired ten months ago. Dave looked forward to the camping adventures that he and Jan would have in their new fifth wheel camper. He rarely wanted to camp much farther than about fifty miles from home. The allure of being able to run home to shower was powerful for Dave and kept him close to home. When he wasn't camping, Dave spent much of his time cutting wood which he used inside the house in his wood burning stove which often kept the house a bit too cozy warm. He recently built a fire pit in his yard and enjoyed using his newly acquired Can Cooker to make meals. Dave was known for his hat collection and was rarely seen without one of them atop his head. The A&E Channel was Dave's constant companion. He especially enjoyed watching Duck Dynasty, and frequently quoted Phil Robertson "I'm Happay, Happay, Happay!!" For some variety, Dave also watched American Pickers and Storage Wars, but often settled for whatever happened to be on at the time. Somewhere along the way, Dave picked up an almost encyclopedic knowledge of Chevy vehicles and could quote facts and figures about any Chevy car or truck in question. Mostly, though, Dave was a farmer. That was his life's work and his passion. Whether working at the ARDC, or toiling in his massive home garden, Dave was most content when working the land. The GPS and other onboard technology did not quite agree with Dave – he was "old school" when it came to farming. But he, none the less, found a sense of belonging and great satisfaction when he was in the field working crops. He is survived by his wife Jan Werner of Wahoo; children Tony (Stacey) Barnes of Wahoo, Wendy Werner of Dallas TX, Kasey (Janelle) Werner of Wichita KS; brother Gary (Norma) Werner of Lincoln; sister Linda Fueling of Hickman NE; grandchildren Justin, Parker, Sydney, Gavin and Brendan. Dave was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Iona Werner; son Jason Barnes; brothers Ed Werner and Billy Werner. Dave's brother, Pastor Gary Werner will officiate at Dave's funeral. Casket Bearers will be Kasey Werner, John J. Vybiral, John K. Vybiral, Justin Gladney, Parker Barnes, Tony Barnes, Sydney Barnes and Ed Booth.
