In Loving Memory of Edna I. Hanson

Life Legacy

Edna I. Hanson, age 67 of Mead, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at her home.

She was born November 17, 1942 at Cook, NE, to Edward and Anna (Neemann) Pieper. Edna’s parents both died when she was a young girl. Edna grew up in Tecumseh, NE where she lived with her cousin Hilda and Hank Mehlhop until they moved to Wahoo in 1958. Edna graduated from Wahoo High School in 1960. Following graduation, she went to work as a bookkeeper for Farmer’s Co-op in Wahoo.

Edna met Dale Hanson on a blind date while he was home on leave from the military. They were married September 10, 1967 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wahoo. Edna and Dale lived on the same farm near Mead that Dale’s great-grandparents homesteaded. Edna quickly adapted to farm life, and took over bookkeeping duties for the farming operation. While raising her three sons, Edna enjoyed woodworking and crafting and made Christmas ornaments for the Sunday school at Alma Lutheran Church. As a member of the church, Edna taught Sunday school, served as church treasurer for ten years, and was active in the women’s circle. While serving as church secretary, Edna reformatted the church newsletter from a one-page document into an informative, multiple page publication.

Edna’s family was very important to her. She loved raising her three sons and prepared amazing meals for her family. But, after many years as the only female in a house full of men, Edna rejoiced at the opportunity to play Tea Party with her grand-daughters. Her four grandchildren were Edna’s pride and joy. Christmas was always a special holiday for her, and she enjoyed collecting Swedish Christmas decorations. Edna was an avid fan of Husker Women’s Basketball, and rarely missed a game whether attending in person, or listening on the radio.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Anna Pieper and Hilda and Hank Mehlhop.

She is survived by her husband Dale of Mead; sons and daughters-in-law Jeff and Mary of Ithaca, Jay and Jenna of Mead, and John and Madde of Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren Emily and Kaitlyn of Mead and Christopher and Matthew of Ithaca; brothers Edward (Pat) Pieper of Olathe, KS, Bruce (Deb) Mehlhop of Ankeny, IA; sisters Dorothy Hessler of Grand Junction, CO, Margaret (Darrel) Johns of Syracuse, NE, Ruby (Walt) Walker of Hastings, NE; aunt Ruby Pieper of Cook, NE; and sister-in-law Marilyn (Jerry) Volin of Wahoo.

Serving as casket bearers will be Dale Johns, Alan, Johns, George Nygren, Jr., Aaron Nygren, Ron Volin and Steve Volin.
